On behalf of White Woods Public School, we would like to welcome all new and returning families to our school community. We are looking forward to an exciting year of learning opportunities and a wide range of engaging activities that make our school a great place to be!

The beginning of a new school year can be an overwhelming time for families as students can sometimes feel anxious about new classrooms and routines. The staff at White Woods have worked very hard to look at a “best fit” for each child when determining class lists. Please know that we are bound by strict numbers of students in our classrooms that must be adhered to. Despite our best efforts, there are always changes with new students moving in, and others moving out. Unfortunately, we never know our “true” numbers until the school year begins. This means there is always a possibility of changes to class lists right up to the third week of school. Please be patient as we work through this process and communicate to your child that the classroom they start in, may not be the classroom they remain in for the remainder of the year. Together we hope to make the start of the new school year as smooth and positive as it can be for your child.

The first week of school we will be sending home a package containing all the start-up information needed for the school year. Enclosed are the following documents, some of which must be returned by specific dates:

Here are some key reminders and helpful hints for the upcoming school year:

Parking Protocol:

1. ELK Morning drop off

Each morning, ELK students can be dropped off at the front doors. An ELK Team member will be there to greet, and students will go directly into their classrooms. If ELK students are arriving by bus, they will be escorted directly to class.

1. Morning Kiss & Drop Off

We now have a Grade 1 to 8 Morning Kiss & Drop Off area at the North side of our school, near the track.  The Morning Kiss & Drop Off was created for additional safety for our students when parents/guardians are dropping off students.  When dropping off your children (grades 1-8) we ask that you remain in your car.  There will be adult supervisors there to help guide your child/children in the right direction to the fenced-in back playground.  Please drive away from the area as quickly as possible to avoid traffic congestion.   Thank you for your co-operation.

1. End of day pick-up

Busses will continue to load from the playground and walkers will exit the school by the side door by room 13. School doors are locked until the end of the day at 3:05pm. Students being picked up will meet their parent/guardian/caregiver at the fenced in ELK yard and will be signed out by the staff member on duty. As you can imagine, the end of the day is very busy, and we want to ensure that every child gets home safely. For this reason, we ask that you let the school know if you are picking your child up by 2:15pm so he/she can be added to the pick-up list and taken off their bus list.

Reminders:

• Parents/guardians are responsible for purchasing items for your child(ren) to bring to school. Consider items such as re-usable water bottle, pencils, erasers, pencil case, ruler, glue stick, markers, and a binder with dividers.
  • Individual teachers will be sending a list of required classroom items the first day of school
• Students can not arrive before 8:30am as there is NO supervision before that time.
• Personal electronic devices should not be brought to school. Cellphones and other electronics must be kept in students’ bags and in lockers.
• Outdoor use of electronics is not permitted. The school and staff members are not responsible for lost or damaged items brought from home.
• Proper footwear is required indoors and on playground equipment. Please send a pair of indoor running shoes for use inside the school/gym and classroom. Avoid open-toed, backless shoes on climbing equipment.
• We are a scent free school. Please do not send perfumes or essential oils to school.
• No parking in front of the school between the two orange pylons. This area is for student transportation including mini vans and cabs.
• Peanuts and nuts are not allowed at school.
• Please read over the WWPS Student & Parent Handbook with your child/children.

Please access the link to a document that provides information about the First Rider program (for JK first time bus riders) that will be taking place in the summer. As well, there are descriptions of many other program supports for students and families.

On Friday, May 2oth we will be having a pizza lunch combo for the students. The combo includes one slice of pepperoni and cheese pizza, a juice box, and a bag of chips for $6.00. Additional slices of pizza may be ordered for $2.25. The money raised will go towards the grade 7/8 class trip in June. Orders must be made in cash online by Tuesday, May 17th. Thank you for supporting our 7/8 trip!
