The Ontario Ministry of Education has introduced a new graduation requirement for secondary students to complete two online learning credits as part of the 30 credits required for the Ontario Secondary School Diploma (OSSD).Ìý It applies to students who entered grade 9 on or after September 1, 2020.Ìý Although students working towards an Ontario Secondary School Certificate (OSSC) or Certificate of Accomplishment are not required to complete this new graduation requirement they may take eLearning courses.
The graduation requirement is intended to support students in developing familiarity and comfort with learning and working in a fully online environment, as well as developing digital literacy and other important transferable skills that they will need for success after secondary school, including in post-secondary education and the workplace.
Exception:Ìý Remote Learning Credit Earned in 2020-2021:
The ministry recognizes the extraordinary circumstances of the COVID-19 pandemic.Ìý As a result,Ìýup to oneÌýsecondary school credit that was completed by students who were in Grade 9 during the province-wide school closures (from April 2021 to June 2021) may be counted towards the graduation requirement.
Opting-Out of the eLearning Graduation Requirement:
A parent/guardian, a student who is 18 years of age or older, or a student who is 16 or 17 years of age and has withdrawn from parental control, may opt-out of the graduation requirement for any reason during the student’s secondary school program by submitting the formÌý(Appendix A)Ìýto the school that the student attends. Once the form has been submitted, the school will acknowledge receipt. In any school year, the form must be submitted by May 30th .

Near North District School Board offers a dynamic way to teach and learn through courses in an online eLearning platform. eLearning provides students with a flexible alternative to the face-to-face classroom. This online setting can support a student's educational plan when courses are not available to them at their home school, when a flexible alternative learning environment is required or when matching student-preferred learning styles to programming needs.
The benefits of eLearning include:
- Access to online courses through video and interactive media
- Learning tailored to student needs
- Easy access to resources and courses
- More credit choices for graduation
- Access to more course options for small or isolated schools
Students must be registered in an Ï㽶ֱ²¥ secondary school in order to enroll in an eLearning course.
An eLearning course can only be selected after consultation with a guidance counsellor to ensure necessary program pre-requisites are met.Ìý Courses are taught by certified teachers and will be taught in an asynchronous delivery mode meaning that students will be online at different times. However, interaction through discussions and chat forums will be required throughout the course.​
